Fishing for answers in oceanographic data : a first look at recent validation studies
"Large-scale changes in sea surface temperature are key indicators of
climate change. To measure global sea surface temperature to the accuracy
necessary to determine whether climate change is occurring requires
well-calibrated sensors and rigorous validation. Using time series from a
shipboard interferometer, we look at measurements of the air-sea
interface, in particular, the surface skin layer. Since it is the
emission from this upper millimeter of the ocean that is measured by
infrared sensors on earth-observing satellites, it is crucial to
understand the evolution and dependencies of skin temperature on
environmental factors. In particular, we investigate diurnal signals in
the skin and sub-skin layers related to insolation and wind forcing. We
also explore the contributions of the intervening atmosphere to the
retrieval of skin surface temperature from satellites, focusing primarily
on clouds and aerosols"
