POST-DOCTORAL APPOINTMENTS IN BOTH THE MODELLING AND FIELD ECOLOGY OF CORAL REEFS

UNIVERSITY OF QUEENSLAND, BRISBANE (Part of the ARC Centre of Excellence for Coral Reef Studies)

Applications are invited for 4 post-doctoral positions to be based at the University of Queensland, Brisbane Australia (UQ). Two of these appointments are made directly by UQ and two are made at the University of Exeter (UK) but post-holders will be seconded to the University of Queensland.

1) Spatial modelling of coral reef community dynamics, 5 years, funded by the ARC. Field studies will take place at Heron Island.

2) Reef field ecologist, 5 years, funded by the ARC. To work at the Univesity’s research station at Heron Island as well as elsewhere in Australia and the Pacific. A range of long-term studies will be implemented.

3) Modelling of climate change impacts and bioerosion on coral reefs, 4 years, funded by the European Union. This position is based at the University of Exeter (UK) but the post-holder will be seconded to the University of Queensland. This position is part of a collaborative project with many Caribbean partners and will involve extensive travel in the region

4) Spatially-realistic modelling of coral metapopulation dynamics, 3 years, funded by NERC (UK). This position is based at the University of Exeter but the post-holder will be seconded to the University of Queensland. Travel back to Exeter will take place to liase with partners modelling climate change.

All four positions will complement on-going field and theoretical studies of both Caribbean and Pacific coral reefs. Post-holders will join a diverse network of scientists that include coral biologists, field ecologists, climate modellors, and conservation biologists. Each of the positions is motivated by a conservation need and outcomes of the research will contribute to the sustainable management of these threatened ecosystems. The long tenure of these positions make them an excellent opportunity to develop an impressive track record in marine conservation.

Eligibility : Applicants of any nationality are eligible to apply for these positions. A PhD and appropriate publication track record are required for all posts. A background in ecological modelling is required for posts 1, 3 and 4 though this does not have to involve coral reefs or marine ecosystems.. For post 3, a background in bioerosion and reef accretion / calcification would be highly desirable. The field ecologist should already have developed a track record in coral reef ecology and have interests in applying their work to solve conservation problems. For this position, a familiarity with Pacific systems would be preferred but is not mandatory.

All appointments begin on the 1st April 2010. Salary for posts 1 and 2 is AUS$61,399 pa plus generous superanuation package (additional 17%). Salary for post 3 starts at £28,839 - £32,458 depending on experience. Salary for post 4 starts at £26,391 - £30,594 depending on experience.
