Eddies and Leddies
Interdisciplinary Study off Algeria
The driving forces and consequential circulation of the Western Mediterranean Sea have been studied for a relatively long time. The recent technical improvements, mainly satellite imagery, have prompted a regeneration of interest by the international community in this area.
ELISA was an interdisciplinary operation to increase the oceanographic understanding of the Western Mediterranean Sea, looking at the role of the Algerian Basin through the detailed study of the Algerian Current activity. Field work took place between July 1997 and July 1998.
Study Area : Southwestern Mediterranean
Close-up on the ELISA area: eastern part of the Algerian Basin (37°N - 40°N , 4°E - 9°E)
The framework of this experiment was the European program MAST-3 (MArine Science and Technology Program)/ MATER (MAss Transfer and Ecosystem Response), 1996-1999.

Within this MAST-3/ MATER program framework, the companion ALGERS project studied microwave remote sensing (ERS) in the western part of the Algerian Basin, and carried also investigations of algerian eddies during the 2 campaigns ALGERS-96 and ALGERS-98. Click to visit the MATER web site
