The
workshop conclusion was twofold :
 |
On
one hand, the interest shown by the participants was high: it is clear
that in spite of past projects en efforts already dealing with the
Mekong delta shrimp activity, the EC Gambas project is deemed
necessary : there are still too many problems and knowledge to be
acquired on the road to sustainability. At the same time, the
temptation is strong to catch the same tracks as some other South-East
Asian countries in terms of intensification, despite some dramatic
experience they underwent. This is the reason why to day’s project
should be built on yesterday’s experience. This leads us to the
second point.
|
 | We
have to recognize that knowledge capitalization is quite difficult: an
evidence of it is the fact that few other Mekong delta present or past
projects were represented at the workshop, when the Mekong web site
advertises for 18 of them! Some of the responsibility is to be borne
by the organizers, as delta people were also under-represented (maybe
due to the reluctance to speak English), but some also probably
resorts to researchers’ unwillingness to disseminate and confront
their results. The advice
that could be given here is to “get out of one’s shell” and
communicate as much as possible. This will be reminded to all
participants over project duration: communicate and publish!
