Overall objective(s)

Project purpose

Expected results

Activities

Activity 1 - Definition of ecological indicators of environmental diagnosis and aquaculture potential assessment

Activity 2 -    Analysis of practices and socio-economics of shrimp farming

Activity 3 - Ecosystem and land-use mapping and data base,

Activity 4 - Integration  of results,  statistical  analysis,  production of methodological guidelines, dissemination of results

Activity 5 - Training program, workshop and seminars

Objective

The objective of this activity is (1) to train the participants to the project to methodologies used in the program  (2) to transfer the methods developed during the project to some actors (public agencies and regional bodies).

One aspect of the training is to teach the very actors of aquaculture management at provincial level with practical work on a real case study. It is intended to make them grasp the relevance of proper data collection, analysis and exchange in order to foster practical answers to farmers’ difficulties.

Methods

Training of Vietnamese participants will be effective all along the project and will be organized both in French institutes and in Asia :

short training periods of 4 to 6 weeks will be held in the French bodies taking part in the project (ecology at Université de Toulouse, environment at IRD and Crema, data analysis and treatment in Ifremer, economics in CEDEM);.

long-term training at AIT Bangkok : environment, remote sensing and GIS.

“Hands-on” workshop at mid-project

Fisheries representatives of provinces and local actors will be invited to join the projects participants in a real case study, the agenda of which might be as follows :

2 or 3 day field work in the Nha Trang vicinity, with water and farm sampling,

at ION, 3 days’ workshop with the following tasks :

simplified environmental data analysis and computation of ecological indicators,

on GIS, edition of case study maps, capture of field work data, qualification of land cover status of each sampled area,

analysis of farm technical data, critical discussion on the actual efficiency of sampled farms and their potential sustainability,

suggestions for modifications in techniques, farm positioning, scenarios on GIS

Organization of initial and final seminars with all the participants, a selection of fisheries officers and possibly other decision makers to inform about (1) project relevance (2) outputs.

Analysis of the possibility of sustaining the project by increasing links between ION and provincial fisheries through the promotion of a network between the actors.

Discussions will be held during and after the workshop about the viability of a network between the provinces. Under the supervision of ION, the network will aim at strengthening the links between aquaculture actors and disseminating project’s guidelines and tools in every day’s life of provincial fisheries services.
