Activities

Activity 1 - Definition of ecological indicators of environmental diagnosis and aquaculture potential assessment

Activity 2 -    Analysis of practices and socio-economics of shrimp farming

Activity 3 - Ecosystem and land-use mapping and data base,

Activity 4 - Integration  of results,  statistical  analysis,  production of methodological guidelines, dissemination of results

Activity 5 - Training program, workshop and seminars

Objectives

This activity aims at treating and integrating data collected in activities 1 to 3 in order to assess the relative importance of each main parameter (ecology, farm practices and economy) in the production performances. This will be made through statistical analysis (PCA principal Component analysis...), spatial analysis. The expected outputs are methodological guidelines and operational tools.

Methods

1) A data base will be designed, containing four types of data:

environmental,

farming practices,

socio-economy,

production efficiency.

This task will be performed at the beginning of the project, in order to be operational as soon as data collection starts.

Then, after completion of data (last third of the project) a statistical approach will be carried out on variables explaining efficiency, successively linking production efficiency to :

2) quantified ecological indicators,

3) farming practices

4) socio-economic variables.

5) Establishing these relationships will allow to identify and compare the production determinants that will be involved in the data crossing. In a second step all the sampled farms will be discriminated by a multivariate analysis between these determinants.

This will lead to a typology of production systems based on environment, production system and economics indicators which will then allow to determine :

a) the overall best environment,

b) the most suitable farming practice and socio-economics (investment capacity, knowledge, etc.) for given environmental features.

A practical methodological guide will sum up all results and display an environmental scale indicating which type of aquaculture should be conducted along with specific parameters of types 2) to 3).

To give it a user-friendly look, the guide will be illustrated with site maps elaborated using the GIS : pie charts, graphs overlain on farm maps, showing the farm integrated in its environment.

The dissemination of the results will have to be made both locally and internationally. Apart from traditional articles in scientific journals, the methodological guide will be edited and published as a  high quality full color booklet, for publicity in the sector of aquaculture all over Vietnam. The network of fisheries services will be used for dispatching. It will also be placed on IO Nha Trang web site and publicised accordingly. Others media such as newsletters (NACA, AIT, World Aquaculture Society, possible media within the EU) will be sought.

Outputs

paper material, i.e. a methodological guide with detailed site maps

typology, scale, combining ecological, zootechnical and economical determinants of production systems,

training of 2 or 3 scientists to the multivariate analysis in order to conduct monitoring survey every five years.
