The
tourist resources have been analysed by carrying
out a survey on the hotels and boarding houses.

Thirteen
of the 72 islands in the archipel are able to
offer tourists accommodation of various kinds.
This
accommodation for hotel and boarding houses, is of the following four kinds:
camping sites, rooms to let, bungalows and
"fare" (traditional houses). Since the
capacity of these structures depends on their
size, which is extremely variable, it is not
possible to state exactly how many tourists they
are able to accommodate. Some of the bungalows can
house 6 to 8 people and others, 4 to 6. The map
below shows the various types of accommodation
available on these twelve atolls, which are rather
sparsely equipped in this respect.

Bungalows
and "fares" are the most widespread type
of rented accommodation available, especially
around the lagoons and on the public and private
"motus" (islets). Mangareva is the only
atoll which mainly provides accommodation of the
bed and breakfast type with local inhabitants.
Considerable efforts are being made at present to
promote this
sector, which also attracts local tourists.
Since 1992, "GIE Tahiti Tourisme" has
been publishing a most attractive "Guide de
la petite hôtellerie et du logement chez
l'habitant” of the Polynesian Islands,
which is updated every two years, and an annual
show focusing on boarding houses and bed and
breakfast accommodation ("Salon des pensions
de famille et de l'hébergement chez
l'habitant") has been taking place since
1997.
