Nihiru,
which is one of the Central Tuamotu atolls, is situated 16°41'
south and 144°53' west. It was discovered by Bellingshausen in
1820, and is now inhabited by only twenty or so permanent
occupants, most of whom originated from Taenga. At the
administrative level, this island depends on the commune of
Taenga.
