Hiti was discovered by Bellinghausen in 1820.

  • This island is a small atoll situated 16°42' south and 144°09' west.

  • Its nearest neighbour is Tuanake. Hiti is a  circular atoll with the typical morphological features of the Central Tuomotu atolls: to the north, there is a narrow strip of reef covered with wooded "motus", and to the south, there is a much broader reef, which is almost completely immersed. This atoll has no natural channels communicating with the sea.

  • The area of the emergent land on this atoll is 150 hectares, and that of the lagoon is 2 900 hectares.

It belongs to the administrative commune of Katiu.
